Google Places

Google places, previously Google’s Local Business Center, is Google’s online directory of local businesses. For many local searches for services and products, Google displays a number of Places listings at or near the top of its search results, below the first Adwords sponsored ads. Places results are also shown when someone searched from Google Maps, or any of a number of associated sites that use Google’s mapping technology.

It is important to realise that while a high ranking in Google places can help your ranking in Google’s natural search results, there is no direct correlation between the two – the algorithms used in each are entirely different and separate.

How to get listed  in Google places

You must claim your business’ listing in Google Places in order to edit the information shown. You will be required to supply an address for your company, and to respond correctly to correspondence sent to that address. Note that a company can have only one address listed, even if it has offices in several locations, and only one company can be listed at any given address. It is important to plan your listing and get things right from the start.

How to Rank High in Google Places

Once you’ve claimed your listing, you can add text, images and videos to describe your products and services, all of which must be approved by Google. Others can also add customer reviews of your company. All of these contribute to your ranking for a given location and search phrase.

Remember that only a few Google Places listings are return for local searches (it varies, but it’s usually between three and seven). It’s vital that these results are yours and not your competitors!

This is why you should call Hoot for help with your Google Places listing.
